Sounds like a good plan.
I would start off on Craigslist. Do a search for the area/jobs you are thinking about. That will give you an idea of what skills people hiring are looking for and you can go from there.
Use the free VM player to setup your own home LAN for experiments, download a copy of
Wireshark read up on
LAN troubleshooting
Get an account on
4chan.org with a really cool nick.
Look for websites of
individuals offering security services to see what they are doing and how they are presenting themselves. You might then mimic some of that and try to market "Security Reviews" to smaller companies. Start with volunteering your services to a few non-profits, good causes, or companies friends work at to get some experience and a few references.
