The kid's holding his ears because of the screaming. I never have seen anyone put their hands over their ears during the fall. They're usually hands up, posing or grasping their armrests... I can't see a kid that age doing a pose during the pic... (But I could be wrong.)

That is a VERY common thing kids who are uncomfortable do. When Theo's in his crib and upset, that's
exactly what he does with his hands.
