Actually, it very well cold have. Because the danger lies not in, "I'm a geek and know those characters don't go together, therefore it sucks." The danger lies in, "WTF was that plot about? Why the hell are those two villains working together? What is this contrived bs?" It's happened before (Batman Returns and, even worse, Batman and Robin, for instance). You don't have to know the comics to recognize bad writing and poorly pieced together gimicks.
