Got to the drug store and go into the section for African decent products, get some Queen Hellene or equally old-fashioned deep conditioner, saturate your dry hair with it, put a plastic bag or cap on top, then use a knit or polar fleece cap on that, leave on for as long as you can stand (hours) a few of these should either get the color out or at least get your hair ready for bleach.
Thank you so much for the advice! I think I've got some cheapo shampoo from a camping trip and if that doesn't work, we'll head off for some heavy duty conditioner.
