Actually, there are self-cleaning litter boxes. We have one in our house. Although it should be called a "semi-self-cleaning litter box" as you still have to clean out the collection area. But at least the cat always has a clean box to use. And it is much easier to clean these once a week or so rather than scooping every day.

It's funny; we have the self-cleaning and a traditional box with Arm & Hammer clumping litter (we actually spent several months trying out several brands and this was far and above the cats' favorite) but one of our cats uses mostly the self-cleaning and another that mostly uses the traditional box. A third cat uses either, but prefers to go outside.

A fourth cat, who should just hurry up and die already damnit (she is 20 and has all sorts of problems, but is still a happy camper) won't use ANY catbox and we have to keep puppy pads in a couple of key parts of the house. To her credit, she is good about using them, though sometimes misses a little accidentally. And she has the most foul smelling poop of any cat I've ever been staff to (and the puppy pads are in the living room and entry hall, so we always get to enjoy her odoriferous gifts).
