From the TiVo site:

Monthly: $20
Lifetime: $500

Break even: 2 years, one month ($500 / $20 = 25 months)

(Of course, not counting the possible transfer of another lifetime device, which is what we did when we purchased our TiVo Premier XL earlier this year.)
