Interesting. I went the opposite direction this time. Going closer to top of the line (helped by having a hefty rewards credit at Dell after buying a TV).
But I'm also taking a technology risk - got an Epson "EcoTank" printer. Most of our issues with the past couple printers have been around ink-cartridge hell. Between the cost of genuine cartridges, the ****tiness of the cheap third-party cartridges, and the fact that we print so rarely that 30% of the ink is spent deep-cleaning heads every time I want to print I had enough.
The EcoTank printers don't have cartridges. You get ink in bulk bottles and fill tanks. Supposedly more reliable? We'll see. Filling the tanks is a fun operation - but holy crap is it nerve wracking handling a huge bottle of that ink. One bobble and my office is a cyan nightmare.
