There's a funny website that catalogues the funny things people overhear on the subway. Your comment about the "mother ship" reminds me of that.

Perhaps it's not that music is getting more interesting, but the delivery systems are better. Internet + word of mouse + downloadable music + iPods + podcasts + LOT, etc. You don't have to go underground to hear harder to find good bands anymore. The underground has found a way to come to us. Music Moles!
