iPods are the easiest to get into for beginners. Simple controls, easy interface via iTunes, etc. The price is it's biggest downer. I'm on my 4th Gen of iPod now, a 30GB Photo. I started with a 1 Gen 5GB, moved to a 10GB 2nd Gen (still not enough space), bumped to a 20GB 3rd Gen (barely enough space) and now have my Photo, which has pretty much all the music I listen to (and some I hardly ever do) with a few gigs of storage left over for shuttling things around.

iRiver makes a good product, but their strongest product is the Media Player, for video. And it's somewhat large for the MP3 world. I'd say go with an iPod... Of course, look at my avatar...
