#5 stabs directly at the feeling of most people (even if they can't verbalize it), I think.

When I was last driving home from DL I was alone and so listening to talk radio. The host was saying "I don't care about gay marriage because I don't see how it affects me, and I'm selfish. So, convince me how gay marriage harms me and I'll oppose it."

Pretty much all the people who called in either said that it would lead to more gay people (which is faulty since it requires the assumption that being gay is bad) or that it would devalue his marriage.

Then it occured to me that many people put their marriage in the same category as the value of their home. That its value is intangible and therefore the freedoms of others have to be restricted to help maintain your property's value.

So, the Defense of Marriage Act (and the myriad other similar efforts) are just the marital equivelant of a Homeowners Association that dictates what kind of flowers you can plant in the front yard.

Since the mindset that leads to HOAs is completely foreign to me, it is no suprise that I can't comprehend the mindset that my marriage should be protected by telling other people how to marry.
