Harry Potter is sort of an accidental hero. He is not extraordinary- the things that have happened to him are, but he is just a kid, nothing more. As the books progress and the plot unfolds, you see this more clearly. He's more a victim than anything up to this point; as he ages he matures and starts to take on a more proactive role, particularily after he discovers some unpleasant news in book five.
