I think I had the advantage of forknowledge that there was very little story to this movie, that it was more about loosely connected ideas. Linklater himself admits that the movie severd as a catch-all for things he just couldn't fit into his other films for whatever reasons.

What also helped was the pause in the middle for a 30 minute discussion with our friend about the nature of dreaming. Even though I disagreed with a lot of the angles the movie took, I was most pleased with the lines of thought it triggered.
