We get a lot of donations at the public library that are completely unusable, like books with loose bindings, outdated computer manuals (Windows 95, thanks!), and other random things. At the school library it's often brand new, gorgeous books - that I have no use for. Humongous coffee table book on the Civil War? Probably not going to be useful for K-6.

Having said that, BTD is right about board games. I'm sure none of our swankers would donate a board game that's unusable.
