An interesting observation I heard on why Crash might have won it: Crash won the SAG award for best cast. So it seems to be a favorite within the acting community (thanks to its ensemble cast), and actors make up a large block of acadamy votes.

Ralphie's sister, who is in the Academy, thinks that may be part of it. She also thinks that voters like films shot in LA, about LA etc. She said that there was also some negative buzz for BBM because it was shot in Canada, you know a non-LA place... (She voted for 'Brokeback' from what I hear.)
