This is going to sound like such BS, but it's the honest to goodness truth.
My dad was a cop for about 33 years. Back in the day, he had a patrol partner named Bradley Kaanana. Officer Kaanana was shot and killed in the line of duty by a sniper who was shooting at cars on the Pali Highway on O'ahu. His story is
here. To honor his friend, my dad named me 'Bradley'.
'Doc' is a nickname I had in grade school and high school when my friends and I dressed up as cowboys for Halloween. I was Doc Holliday. I used to have really bad asthma as a kid. So bad that I couldn't participate in any sports or anything physical. I had had several close calls battling my asthma. So I couldn't run around and play sports or anything. Feeling left out, my dad would comfort me by telling me that Doc Holliday used to cough a lot too but that didn't stop him from being a hero...
So, in college I changed my name officially to 'Braddoc'. 'Brad' to honor a fallen hero and 'Doc' to honor my dad and his great advice.
