So...
Dad's doing much better. A visit from the surgeon on Monday confirmed that the infection is going away, the surgery got everything it needed to get, and that the affected area was healing well. A visit from the plastic surgeon yesterday brought more good news in that they determined that they'd be able to begin the reconstructive surgery process today. This is good because it means he can start the recovery from that immediately, AND that there won't be a grizzly wound to go home with (which was the original assumption). It will make both his and my mom's life easier. I won't go into details of what's going to be done, it's pretty unpleasant. But progess is being made, and now the hope is that he can recover in time to not jeopardize his forthcoming retirement (he saved up 200+ sick days over 40 some-odd years to bolster his retirement, and now if he has to use more than 10, it means a cut in his retirement bottom line. Freaking irony).
And the best news of all is that when the surgeon saw him on Monday and reitterated the "You would have been dead in another 24 hours", it finally seemed to sink in what that meant. Hopefully that will finally serve as his wakeup call.
In other news, my Grandmother ended up in the hospital on Monday with pneumonia. Other than some anxiety attacks in the hospital bed, she seems to be doing okay now. I don't know how my mom's holding it together right now.
