For laughs, I sent FotF an email about SpongeBob:
"Is your organization serious about your comments about SpongeBob being gay? I find Focus on the Family to be a very close-minded and homphobic ministry. Your statement about this character will go down in history as being as idiotic as Falwell's comments on Tinky Winky the Teletubby."
They replied today as follows:
"Greetings from Focus on the Family, and thank you for taking the time to express your concern over the recent _New York Times_ article in which Dr. Dobson commented on the popular cartoon character, SpongeBob SquarePants. We appreciate having an opportunity to offer a few words of clarification on the matter.
At the outset, it’s important to note that, contrary to what some have suggested, Dr. Dobson was *not* criticizing the character of SpongeBob or the program on which he appears. The _New York Times_ article does mention that SpongeBob has “become a well-known camp figure among gay men”; however, if you will re-read the piece carefully you will discover that this observation and the accompanying commentary were made by the article’s author, David D. Kirkpatrick, and not by Dr. Dobson.
Dr. Dobson addresses this situation and its ongoing implications in much greater detail in the February, 2005 edition of his ministry letter. You can access the letter on our Web site at the following link: http://www.family.org/docstudy/newsletters/a0035339.cfm.
We trust this brief reply has served to clarify Dr. Dobson’s intentions for you. Thanks once more for your honest feedback. Best wishes to you in the days ahead.
