I read a bit of the first fairies book and it seemed fine to me. It's written by a wonderful author (she wrote Ella Enchanted, a fantastic fairy tale). As it's about fairies interacting, they'll obviously have to talk to each other.

That said - spinoffs are sad testaments to the unpopularity of risk-taking.
