It's still at least a 2-3 hour wait for anything approaching front and center. If you want absolute dead center...you're still talking 5 hours because there are people who stake that spot out. But there's PLEANTY of equally good spots around there that are free 2-3 hours beforehand.
If you want to reserve space for 8 people, your best bet is to have a couple blankets with you to mark your territory. Blankets and bags/backpacks, etc. Strategic use of such objects lessens the need for people to stick around. 3-4 is good, though it helps if you occasionally bolster that number for short periods (e.g., it's a good idea if, say, 2 or 3 more people show up for a quick 20 minute snack/chat break). Best practice is to have most of your party assembled by about 30 mintues before show time, but people can arrive last minute in a pinch without a big problem (they'll just have to tell the CM-sentries that they know someone in the crowd and they'll be let through).
