Saying that Green Day is "as punk as Mel Torme" is akin to saying that Green Day is not at all punk. And it's not particularly a statement of opinion-- "punk" is The Sex Pistols. Patti Smith. The Ramones.

By the way, one does not need to live in a cave to avoid whatever talentless hack band the studios are foisting upon the unsuspecting (and not yet discerning) target demographic.

One amasses a collection of actually interesting music and one puts it on one's iPod. One might also limit all radio settings to KCRW or other worthy NPR stations.
