(CBS) LONG BEACH, Calif. An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was fatally shot Tuesday, authorities said.

Maria Cecelia Rosa, 30, of Pomona, was shot outside the home of another female deputy in the 2900 block of Eucalyptus Avenue about 6 a.maccording to the Long Beach Fire Department.

Marta Esquivez, a sister of the homeowner, said Rosa often stayed with her long-time friend, who is a sheriff's
detective.

"They were close," she said. "She was close to us, too, because she didn't have no parents and my parents were like ... her parents. She treat them like they were her parents."

The shooting is under investigation. No immediate arrests have been made.

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was fatally shot in Long Beach on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

Maria Cecelia Rosa, 30, of Pomona, was shot in the 2900 block of Eucalyptus Avenue, said Long Beach police Officer Jackie Bezart.
"She did suffer a gunshot wound. She was transported to the hospital and declared dead at the hospital," said Long Beach sergeant David Cannan.
Rosa, found shot in the driveway with a bullet wound to the upper body, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police say the deputy was shot beside her car. NBC4 reports that she was getting ready to go to work and was armed, but not dressed in uniform. Neighbors say they heard the gunfire around 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Police blocked off the area two blocks in each direction and went to doors to question neighbors.
Rosa owned a home in Pomona, but she lived with a friend in Long Beach because it was closer to work.
Relatives tell NBC4 that she worked in the Los Angeles jail system.
A tow truck removed the deputy's car as evidence Tuesday morning.
There were no immediate arrests, and the circumstances of the shooting were under investigation, Bezart said.
