Buying a Bed

Is so confusing.

I want a Queen pillowtop. I've been eyeballing this one (it's 40% off from the listed price, bringing it to $897 for the set). Did my research and it is the same bed used at the Westin, which I have slept in. Also gets great reviews (it's a Simmons). ETA - cost includes delivery and haul away.

Sit n Sleep has beds for more. I can't figure out the Leeds website. I have no idea how much a bed should cost, or how to go about getting the best deal.

Halp please!

I just bought a Spring Air back supporter, queen size, with a pillowtop and it was $600 (with a great frame and box spring) Mancini (which is N Cal only).. That said, I recommend it highly. Springair dot com

You can't beat a Latex Rubber mattress. Get one made with Latex Internationals Talalay Latex. This material feels soft but is actually very supportive. Unlike spring mattresses, which must be firm in order to be supportive(which is why they add the pillow tops to soften, even though pillow tops never last as long as the base support), latex is available in several firmnesses(called ILD's) and no pillow top will be required.

Latex mattresses can be custom built for you by a local foam supplier for hundreds less than they cost at a retail mattress store fyi

I agree, BTD, it's super confusing. Like trying to shop CPUs, with even less direct comparisons. And much like computer models, the model names and numbers change between retailers, so direct comparison is not possible.

I hate bed shopping, it brings the worst of overseas shopping to our hallowed shores. Since I'm strongly anti-haggling this is how we did it.

"Lani, do you know where is a bed store? We should probably finally get a bed."

"I think there's one out by the mall."

<drive to mall, stumble across bed store, walk into store>

<to sales clerk> "What's the firmest bed you have?"

<clerk> "This one, but you don't want a really firm bed."

<us> "We'll take it."

We left happy for not having haggled. And he left happy for having found rubes that paid list price. I think we came out ahead in the deal.

I know there are some Web sites out there (or there were 5 years ago) that link up all the major models with their model names at the different stores (they all sell the same beds they just call them different things) so that you can find one you like and then comparison shop easily. A quick search isn't finding them, but you might poke around the interwebs.

I don't know much about beds - but we do sell them here at Timber Towne in Perris and provide delivery. Looks like prices range from about $300 up to about $800. We are also have a sale and I'm not positive but I think there is an additional percentage off of that price. You can call later and find out for sure if you're interested - 888-201-Wood. Website: http://timbertowne.com

Website doesn't show much - but we've got lot's of beds and mattress sets on display for you to try out and read up on.

Thanks everyone.

Still not sure what I am going to do.

SJ - latex is out. Not allergic, but it makes it not easy to breathe when in close proximity to my face.

I'm going to continue my hunt for the website that Alex mentioned that may or may not still exist.

I will say that the Tempur-Pedic mattresses are amazingly comfortable, but that I will never own one (much to Susan's chagrin) because my body is like a radiator and the Tempur-Pedic's reflect your body heat back at you. Also, they are really expensive.

I have a personal dislike for SnS as their commercials make fingernails on a chalkboard a welcome respit. Because of this, I will never buy anything from them. Besides, their slogan makes absolutely no logical sense: " we'll either lower our price to match someone else's or we will give the mattress for free."

This whole thing started when I went to SnS with my friend for his bed. I didn't like the sales tactics used (pushing the most expensive bed with their fancy electronic pressure sensor thingie). But I did find a bed that I love there, but it was $1200. I can get the bed I am eyeballing + a duvet cover and pillows for $1200.

Not that I have $1200 to start with. But I need a new bed. Mine is 15 years old (and it was a hand-me-down).

The set I am looking at is just under $900. As far as I can tell, that is a good price for a Simmions queen pillow top. But I could be wrong.
