Waking Sleeping Beauty on DVD/Blu-ray November 30
Disney is releasing Waking Sleeping Beauty at the end of November. It tells the story of Disney's return to animation greatness from 1984 to 1994.

Will there be a follow-up film called Putting Beauty Back To Sleep?

I'm anxious to see this, but of course it will be bittersweet - seeing as the Renaissance was so short-lived.

I'm willing to put it in its own box and enjoy that period on its own. Perhaps instead of 3D glasses, viewing this film requires blinders?

Walt himself had only one brief period of animated feature brilliance - 1937 (Snow White) through 1942 (Bambi) - 5 films released within as many years.
His own "renaissance" period was not nearly as good, but a decent run from Cinderella to Jungle Book (7 films stretched over an 18 year period). By contrast, I'd say the Walt Disney Pictures renaissance of the 90's falls squarely in the middle in terms of quality (generally not as good as Walt's early masterpieces, but mostly better than his later stuff) and consisted of 6 films within as many years. In that context, the modern Renaissance of Disney seems in line with Walt's original run of genius ... and is perhaps not so bittersweet after all. All good things must end. |
