Hair Dye Question
If we've used a semi perm. hair dye in a dark brown that never really washed out, can we now use a "frost and tip" type of highlighter over it? Or will it turn orange or green?
What if it was a perm hair dye?

Tint is tint, the only difference between permanent and semi-permanent is wither or not bleach is used to open the hair shaft first. If the dye has never worn out then you have very porous hair, first try shampooing with some cheep (full of laurel-sulfates) shampoo like prell. If that doesn't do it then I would recommend you do several hours-long hot conditioning treatments to get the rest of the color out and get your hair in the best condition you can. As long as the pigment remains you will not get the color results you want. I did the same thing with some Redkin Shades EQ.
Got to the drug store and go into the section for African decent products, get some Queen Hellene or equally old-fashioned deep conditioner, saturate your dry hair with it, put a plastic bag or cap on top, then use a knit or polar fleece cap on that, leave on for as long as you can stand (hours) a few of these should either get the color out or at least get your hair ready for bleach. |

LOL Gn2Dlnd.
It's my daughters hair. I have a feeling she's headed for disaster and I'm trying to stop the train. Teenage daughters have a way of doing things to their hair without notice. I've heard talk and I'm hoping to talk some sense in to her before she turns her head orange or worse.

I recommend Hi-Lighter brand highlights in blue.
And hair grows. I died my hair eggplant. Kept it that way for 6 or 7 months. Got bored and had to bleach it twice to get it out. Totally fried my hair doing it. It's back to normal now, but it took close to a year. Lesson is: better to just shave it off. |

Lol- sorry, I saw the OP last night and just was too tired to answer.... I'm confused about the color that was applied previously- it says semi-permanent, but then later in the post permanent color is mentioned. It does matter what type was used- true semi-permanent color adheres to the outside cuticle layer, while permanent colors are designed to deposit color inside the hair shaft. (Yes, Kevy, I said 'shaft'). When it comes to lightening previously colored hair, your best best it to go to a stylist for a consult. Just say you need to know if they would do it, how much it would cost, and your daughter would have to be completely honest about what she's done to her hair over the past several years. I've had many people lie (either by omission or just outright) thinking it would cause me to say no or to charge more for the service. Anyway, they can tell you if it can be done or not.
