Work of Art - Open Mic Project

We're really enjoying the show Work of Art - The Next Great Artist on Bravo.

I've got an idea - how about after each episode, we do our own works of art, inspired by that week's challenge? Just like our old Inspiration thread, it can be any type of art. You do not have to watch the show to play, of course.

The first episode is on Hulu but the others aren't available. Bravo's site has other tidbits.

The first episode had the contestants do portraits of each other. The second had them using found objects, specifically, electronics junk (old vacuums, TVs, computers, etc) and make sculptural pieces. Last week they were challenged to do a cover for a classic novel (Dracula, Pride and Prejudice, etc) to be published by Penguin.

This week's challenge was to make shocking art. The inspirational artist was Andres Serrano.

I'd hate to have anyone decline to participate because shocking art is such a hard place to get to...and an even harder place to reveal on a message board. If you would rather do one of the prior challenges, go for it.

Of course these challenges are up for interpretation. You may want to do a piece involving found objects but not an actual sculpture, or a cover but not a classic novel, etc. As usual, the whole point is just to have fun with it.

For my part, I hope to dig out some shocking stuff this week.

Hmm... perhaps a derivative work that is a tribute to an extant work by one of the artists? I have an idea inspired by the work of Marco Evaristti that might fly...

You can do me, if you like.

Thanks for the reminder - have to finish up my shocking work!

BTW this week's show involved a ride through New York City in an Audi and time spent in a very nice Audi showroom, then art inspired by their experiences - very open ended (though with the somewhat clunky tie-in).

Worry

“Good morning, sweetie.”
sure hands scoop up his tiny frame
kissing and caressing into wakefulness
shuffle toward the stairs

fuzzy socks slip and skid
she pitches sideways into the railing
the baby tumbles
his head hits the wooden floor audibly

Once down it’s time for breakfast
placed carefully in highchair
she turns away to fill the kettle
a plate for bread and jam

a creak of plastic and aluminum
then a thud. She spins
blood pools under his little cheek
forgot to buckle him in

She sits next to him with food and drink
a rattle shakes in greeting
scrolling through today’s news
sunlight peeking between curtains

eyes on the screen, put down the tea
small hands always reaching
flying liquid and instant screams
steam billows off his chubby arms

Baby’s playthings appeal
soft jingles and sweet music
friends of plastic and polyester
surround, comfort, protect

Mom washes her hands, exits the bathroom
so that’s why he’s been so quiet
face down in a smiling zebra’s belly
not enough air for his tiny chest

Glowing buttons make me laugh
I kick and music plays
teether in my fingers
full of cereal and love

What was that noise? Mommy
laying by the stairs
I need you to get up now
Mommy? Mommy? Please come here

----

Perhaps not shocking so much as dark, but still an interesting exercise. I found it both hard and easy to write.

I'm thinking we could emulate the last challenge by taking one of Nirvanaman's cars out for a spin to it's respective dealership. I'm sure that would create a number of interesting moments to capture.
