Just what the heck have I done now?

And what can I do to fix it? Long story short, wanted my hair a shade lighter, took a shortcut and bought a box, turned kind of yellow. Bought another box and it's really really light yellow. Like in an awful way. Any ideas as to how to fix it? Do you think that I can just buy a box of darker blonde to darken it? Do boxes work that way? I can't really afford to go get it fixed professionally. Am I screwed?

It's time for an intervention here.

Back awaaaayyyyy from the permanent hair dye, dear- your hair has had quite enough!!! It sounds like you need to tone it, and that can be done with semi-permanent color that won't cause any more damage. If your hair is too yellow, you want to mellow it out to a more natural tone, right? So, get some Clairol Loving Care and apply it to your clean, dry hair. Start at the scalp, and apply the color about midway through the strands, leaving out those poor toasted ends until last. (They'll soak up the color, so you only want it on them for the last ten minutes max). As far as shades go, I need a bit more info as to what you've got going on right now, and what you want to get to. You can PM me or we can discuss it here for everyone's amusement!

Above all, don't panic- these things can (nearly) always be fixed.

Wendybeth is my new official hero.

Start here. My natural haircolor is close to the Iridescence Bloom color. I died it with Pure Diamond. It wanted it a whiter shade of blonde, but it was too golden. Sort of like the Candle Glow on that page.

Then I did this. Go to the shade chart. It is closest to the extra light blonde, but it was actually called bleach blonde something.

It actually turned out something like this. Second picture down, third from the left. Only lighter. The ends actually turned out close to how I wanted it. It's the top half that looks really horrible. I just want it a bit darker, a bit more normal, and bit less uniform.

Thanks Wendy!

See... you should have come to me first. Wendybeth made you work too hard. Here is my easy, one-step, quick and painless solution:

Spray paint!

You can find it at any hardware store in a whole bunch of colors!

Clairol Loving Care?!? Pish... what does she know?

KB, you're a brat.

Traci, I think the ash blonde semi-permanent color should work, but use caution through the ends, especially since they are the color you want. The color should cool down the yellow, and kick some depth back in as well. You may have to refresh it in a few weeks, but maybe not. Let me know whatever you decide, and how it goes! (Ps- do you have a Sally supply near you? They sell some things to the public, and I am more familiar with their inventory than the store stuff). GL!

I do have a Sally near me. Again, thanks so much! I won't be able to do anything before Friday, which is cutting it close to our trip, so I've got one shot to get it right. At least it can't get much worse.

Best of luck, Traci! I'm sure it will be fine- I really think that if the tonal quality of your color (I.E. the yellow stuff) is what's bothering you, the ash toner should cancel that out. Your natural color is so light anyway, I'm surprised the color came out so yellowy. Another thing you could try is the Shimmer Lights shampoo from Clairol- it really helps with cancelling out brassiness, but only use once in a while. (I've had some clients turn their hair kind of grey with overuse).

Lol- whilst I've been writing to you, I've been coloring my own hair for our upcoming trip. Let me tell you- foiling ones own hair is not fun.

Judging from your pic, you have loads of hair, which can't be easy to foil yourself. Michael is on his way to pic up the new dye. I'll post as soon as it's dry. I was supposed to get my hair cut before our trip, but I just can't face my stylist like this. Oh well.
