Attn Titanic Afficianados: Wanna press your luck?
As I'm sure anyone who opened this thread knows, we are just a few short years away from the centennial of HMS Titanic's fateful inaugural cruise to the bottom of the ocean.
One enterprising travel company has hit upon the PERFECT way to celebrate - Miles Morgan Travel has chartered a Fred Olsen Cruise Lines ship to recreate the Titanic's route (presumably with the hopes of actually completing it). Complete with the same number of passengers, and the same ports of call. No word if they will be leaving half of the lifeboats off the ship and reconfiguring the hull as to increase the likelihood of sinkage. They began taking reservations today for April 2012. http://www.titanicmemorialcruise.co.uk/

I'd LOVE to do that. Family legend has it that my grandmother's family was all booked to come over from England on the Titanic but then my great-grandmother found out she was pregnant and due right around the time it was set to sail so they ended up coming later on a different ship that didn't sink.

Bah! They should be traveling on a vintage White Star Liner. Are there any currently still afloat (meaning seaworthy)? Ahoy! Calling JWBear!

Reading through the website, it doesn't look like they're going to put much effort into what I would consider the more interesting details. Nothing about reproduction dish patterns or even recreating the menu. Maybe they just don't have those details, but if it's just a regular cruise without much added Titanic-y stuff on board, that'd be pretty disappointing.

According to Wikipedia, there is one surviving original White Star, the Nomadic, but it's just a passenger tender and is being restored and turned into a museum. Of course, the Cunard ships (QMII, Queen Victoria, and the soon-to-be QEIII) carry the White Star name.

Hmmm.... I'd be interested in a Hindenburg 100th anniversary flight... but that won't be until 2037, and by then we'll all have individual air cars anyway.

There are no passenger ships of that vintage still in service. In fact, the oldest currently in service is the Princess Daphne, built in 1954.
