Stereo Total at the El Rey 4/4/2009

We had a great time at the El Rey last night seeing Stereo Total. I love this band and their pop-minimalism, but they always seem to be paired with bizarre opening acts. This time it was Leslie and the Ly's.

How to describe them? If the Gary Larson woman lived in Iowa and started a Rap band and jeweled sweater collection - that would be a start.

They played a short set, which was good as there's just so much of this schtick you can do before it gets old. Would have made a great SNL sketch.

As for Stereo Total they played a great set of their multi-lingual hits. I love their minimalist set-up, a snare drum and cymbal, Guitar, and some sort of 8-bit synth set up. It looks like it can all be packed into a suitcase and so I have to wonder if they traveled the U-Bahns of Berlin playing out their songs.

One of the hilights was whn they were going to play a song in English, "No tututu" which turned out to be a striped down cover of the Rolling Stones Satisfaction that was more deconstructed than Devo's version - the song title?

I can't get

No tututu

Satisfaction

As in the last time I saw them, they invited an unsuspecting member of the audience to join them in their song "j'aime l'amour a'trois" (I love to make love, just the three of us) - and then invited members of the audience to come on stage for Tanzen Koncentriert (concentrated dancing).

Lot's of fun, I'll see them again whenever I can.
