Ambulances don't carry water

So, this ought to teach me that it's never a good idea to try to go into work on a Sunday.

I woke up this morning, scooted to the end of the bed as normal and put my feet on the floor. I then tried to straighten up...and immediately screamed and flopped back down as I felt horrible pain in my lower back. As I lay down, the pain receded relativey quicly, but any movement was out of the question. My limbs all worked, and nothing was numb, but anything but the slightest movement caused severe pain. I tried just lying there for a bit, and took an Alieve, to see if it would relax enough that I could at least get up. But after about 15 minutes it was clear that wasn't going to happen, so CP called 911.

Paramedics came, and (with plenty of pain) got me onto a backboard. They carried me downstairs (in the rain, that sucked) and into the ambulance.

A couple observations about being in an ambulance. First, I kinda had in the back of my mind that thought, "Okay, just relax and deal with the pain, all you've gotta do is deal until you're in the ambulance. Then you can relax" Hah, the amublance ride was probably the worst part. I felt every bump, lean, brake, etc. Second, they don't have water to drink back there. That sucked.

So yeah, doctor says it's "just" a spasm. They took x-rays, all looked clean. They gave me a pain injection (AFTER torturing my with the x-ray machine), then put me on vicodin and soma (there's really drug called soma? Do I really want to be taking that?). It was enough that I could sit up, stand up, and even make up our stairs at home.

So right now, I'm trying to relax at home. I still ache, and it still hurts like a bitch if I move in the wrong direction. But I can move (slowly) without blinding pain.

This sucks. I'm twenty-freaking-eight, what the hell?!

Um, my box fan issues seem pretty insignificant after reading that, GD.

Man, what a scary story. I'm really glad to hear that wasn't something far more serious. Not that what you are going through isn't a major suckfest.

I hope you get to feeling better really soon and please don't hesitate to call if there is anything we can do for you. Take care of yourself.

Ok, the good news is you'll be right as rein in no time ... and will have plenty of extra Soma on hand (and yes, I do want to be taking a drug called 'Soma.')

No. As a matter of fact, yesterday was one of the most lazy days I've had in a long time. We sat around and watched TV. The most strenuous thing we did was go around the corner to shop for clothes and groceries.

The only thing I can think of is that my upper back's been bugging me again recently, as I mentioned in the "So..." thread. It's happened before, and my time with the massage mat thing actually had it feeling really good last night. But it could be that that just kinda put all the muscles in my back on guard and/or my bad posture in general contributed.

Weird... If you continue to have problems, make sure they do some sort of MRI rather than an X-ray; a friend had something similar happen to him (repeatedly) and after months of trying to figure it out they discovered his vertebrae were pinching the spinal cord cover, something which won't usually show up in an X-ray. Simply bending over to pet the dog would elongate his spine just enough to allow space between the vertabrae to open and when he stood back up the tissue would catch. Excruciating and very hard to pin down, but once they caught on treatment was much easier to obtain. (Mostly avoiding stretching the spine, some PT, meds, etc). He's only in his early thirties, so I guess you don't have to be an old fart to have such a thing happen.

Feel better!!!!!
