Unhappy The Hardest Thing I've Ever Had To Do

Good afternoon!

As most of you may know I am headed up to Indiana this coming weekend. During preparations for this my glasses broke. The right side that holds on to the ear snapped. For the past few days it has been taped over.

My folks decided this is a good time to get my eyes checked cause I haven't had that done in awhile. Well the little insurance I do have doesn't cover this and reality hit me while I was there in the office making the appointment and getting my glasses fixed (which was free with the appointment thank goodness). My dad saw the worry on my face as I was mulling over something I have mulled over for many moons.

I pay rent to my parents each month. And I have thought about discussing this many times before but felt that is is not right for me to end the agreement on this because it is not fair to my folks who are housing me well beyond what I feel is an appropriate amount of time.

I knew from his voice that he wanted to discuss all of this and he asked if I wanted to go outside before we had the discussion and I agreed. We started talking about all this and I finally asked what I had been considering to ask for a long time. It hurt to even think about it because I care for my parents a lot and I don't want to screw them over.

To make a long story short there will be discussions between my parents coming up soon and I'll get an answer. It's one of the hardest things I have had to do.

Sorry to just ramble on but I wanted to get it off of my chest.

ooooo kay. Well, I hope it all works well. That was some very cryptic off-your-chesting, but whatever works.

Good luck.

Are you asking your parents to allow you stay rent free, so you can afford insurance? No matter what it must be tough to admit you can't afford the basics, such as health coverage.

This does make me wonder what you think about universal health care.

(I'm sure you already know this, but just ignore iSm, he's being a jerk for no good reason.)

I would much rather prefer a health-care system that is not focused on curing people who are chronically sick, but preventing it. The sicker we get in this country the more the cost of health care rises. The more we focus on preventative care the lower the cost will be.

However if we must be forced with "Socialized Medicine" I am willing to compromise at basic care - checkups, minor illnesses, vision and dental checkups, basic antibiotics for minor ailments, etc. Health Insurance should be designed for emergencies and chronic conditions.

(and that's my political view for the moment...as you can tell I hesitate to express mine because I know I am pretty much alone here)

Anyway the answer to your first question is yes. I have suggested a six month stay. I currently pay $300.00 to my folks. Counting a bonus stimulus (of which I have mixed feelings about) it would be more like seven months (without paying rent). This would allow me some freedom to breath and accumulate some savings at the end of the grace period. I live from month-to-month on the Disability. The rent takes away more than half of what I get. So at present I end the month pretty much broke. If accepted, at the end of the six months I'd actually make $150.00 and I wouldn't be back in the same position at the end of the month like I do now.

Yes this was very hard. I made a giant step today towards where I want to be later.

I hope things work the way you want them to. And good luck with the eye exam as well.

Just an update for y'all,

Eye appointment went fine. No change in prescription so no new glasses needed. Doctor wants to get my cornea on the left eye checked and said it might call for a cornea transplant. I have no idea what that would do. We'll see if their cornea specialist says it is something that needs to be done.

On the rent front it appears my folks are going to let me take six months off from the rent agreement. This will give me $2,000 of breathing room. Thank goodness!

I'm glad things have worked out for you!

I know someone who has put off cornea transplants for years. She is an older lady, and has been struggling with her sight for so long. The thought of having an operation on the eye is scary.

But she had them done, and no longer even needs to wear glasses. She has worn glasses for over 30 years! In fact she can see better than her son!

The technology has gotten so good that the healing is so quick, and vertually pain free. If they say it can help you, I'd go for it!

Good luck!

Technology is a wonderful, albeit often expensive, thing. J still has one more eye to go for his cataracts, and his experience has been nothing short of awesome. When my eyes start to worsen, he'll have superb vision just about forever.

So, should I be jealous?

I hope for the best for you BDB, and will keep the positive thoughts flowing your way.
