The next bookclub thread

We've had a break from the bookclub thing, and even though our Time Traveler's Wife discussion never got off the ground, I thought it was worth another shot.

I nominate Only Revolutions by Mark Z. Danielewski. It made the New York times list, which surprised me, as I don't consider him an author that appeals to the masses. His first book was House of Leaves, which everyone should read. I'm not sure how to describe the writing style of this book, but it is beyond interesting. The guy is a genius. Look at the sample pages on amazon. Everyone's libraries should have lots of copies of this right now.

I'm getting set to read Zadie Smith's On Beauty, since she won the Bookere prize for it, which traditionally has synced with my own taste in reads

I'm in the middle of Time and Chance (see my guilty pleasures thread). I did read I, Lucifer, so that can come off my list. I'd be up for an older TC Boyle re-read (Water Music or World's End).

To once again nominate a piece of non-fiction:

The Heavenly City of the Eighteenth-Century Philosophers by Carl L. Becker.

The title may sound dry but it is a pretty lively short book that was originally presented as a series of lectures at Yale Law in the 1930s. It has the advantages of being widely available in many different printings and therefore easily acquired for a few bucks at a decent used bookstore. It is relatively short and most people could read it in a few days if they wanted and I think it would spark some interesting discussion.

Don't expect it to get much support as a nomination but figured I'd throw it out there.

Actually, I'm going to nominate some nonfiction, too, because I just bought it and I'm going to read it anyhow.

"Polio: An American Story" by David M. Oshinsky. The cover claims it's the winner of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize in History. My dad had polio so it's of personal interest to me.

I'm such a bad player. I just started The Time Traveler's Wife.

And, I guess I'm going to read more of it for the next few hours because I left my copy of The Third man at home.
