Charlie Chaplin's City Lights at LACMA 4/25 & 4/26

Sent by: Los Angeles County Museum of Art

I'll be at Ciachella, but in case anyone else is interested:

Charlie Chaplin's
City Lights
New 35mm Print

Friday April 25
& Saturday April 26
7:30 pm & 9:30 pm

In this tender comedy/drama, the Tramp is mistaken for a millionaire when he tries to help a blind flower vendor regain her sight. Despite three years of personal and artistic setbacks, Chaplin's innovative blend of slapstick and pathos resulted in his most emotionally compelling film. "At the end of City Lights, the blind girl who has regained her sight thanks to the Tramp, sees him for the first time . . . The camera just exchanges a few quiet close-ups of the emotions that shift and intensify in each face. It is enough to shrivel the heart and it is the greatest piece of acting and highest moment in movies."-James Agee.

We'll go. Seeing City Lights on the big screen, in a crowd of people, is the best viewing experience I have ever had in a theater, and ever since I have never missed a chance to see it again. I urge, in the strongest possible terms, anyone within the sound of my voice to go. I'll go with you. Any of the showings, all of the showings, fine with me. Just go.

Did anybody go? I couldn't convince any of my friends and I did not like the idea of going stag, though I do regret my decision a bit. Fact is, all my friends are tired TIRED of me dragging out my Chaplin DVDs. What can one do?

Indeed, Tom and I went - and the earlier Saturday screening was full of first-time viewers (you can tell by the giggles and the gasps - and the silent breath-catching at the end.) It was a delight. My first time seeing it on the big screen. Very enjoyable. T, you can always come with us to see Chaplin. We're always willing.

Carl Davis sometimes tours with a copy of City Lights and a full orchestra, though, for whatever reason, never to Los Angeles. Still, I imagine seeing CL with the music and sound effects being played live is quite the awesome experience.
