Something rotten in the state of my fridge.
Greetings, all.
Not all Los Angeles apartments are equipped with a fridge. I think this is bull **** but many a landlord doth disagree. Moved into my place about three years ago and the former tenant left her fridge because she no longer needed it. Happy to have it but it's been on the fritz since she gave it to me and it's currently dying. The freezer freezes hard core but the rest is barely keeping things cool. I buy groceries and they quickly rot. I'll not wax poetic about the smell... If any of you are upgrading to a new fridge and need to get rid of a working older fridge, please PM me. Sorry to bother but I thought it safer to try here before moving on to Craigslist. Or, if you know of a discount appliance store in Los Angeles, please share. Thanks, Aud |

What size is the space? And who is your electric company?
SCE is offering a small credit for the purchase of an energy star fridge as well as a small credit for disposal of your old (working) fridge. They don't say how well it has to work. Info here. |

Big enough for a standard, single door fridge.

We've got an apartment size fridge at work that they are trying to get rid of. The price is right, free. But you'd have to come pick it up (Orange County)
If the landlord did not supply the refrigerator, he's not required to maintain it. |

Have you checked the all the basics?
Is the condenser dirty? Is there ice buildup on the freezer evaporator cover? Are the doors sealing tight when they close? |

Damn, I wish I was closer. I still have my fridge from when I had to buy one there in SoCal and it's just sitting in my garage.
I don't really understand that standard practice of not supplying them in SoCal apartments. It's like not supplying a stove. |

Slightly off topic: when I was a California apartment dweller, my mother would always remind me, "Remember, they have to paint every three years." I couldn't convince her otherwise because that was what had been in her New York apartment leases for years.

I'm guessing it has to do with the high rate of home ownership in California vs. the rest of the country. A greater percentage of people own homes/expect to own homes eventually, therefore a greater percentage of people own refrigerators.
Or maybe Californians are just more picky about their fridges.

We had the same prediciment when we lived in LA. Had to buy a new one. Then when we moved here we had to sell it because everyplace came with a fridge. It seems to be an LA thing, no where else in CA that I've lived have I seen this.
I don't know if there's one there, but we got a decent deal at Sears outlet on our washer/dryer. They have stuff that's been returned or is dinged. My washer had a small ding on one side. They fully warranty everything but they don't deliver. I've gotton most of my current appliances at Pacific Sales. I know they have some LA locations. They will deliver and set up.

I've never had a place come with a fridge until this one and we made them take it out because it was small and stinky. Oddly enough, there was no oven/stove and they had to buy one - apparently the previous renters decided to take it with them.
We work with Pac Sales through my office. I can't get any discount there but it seems like I've heard they don't work on commission so maybe that's a good thing. Craig's list has been great and terrible with appliances. Make sure it works well before you fork over money for it. (I would bring a fridge thermometer in it and let it sit a few minutes to get the temp of the fridge and freezer.) If it's not on, don't buy it.
