Cirque du Soleil Announces Michael Jackson Show
Not sure how I feel about this.
Part of me wishes CdS would stick to original material. That said, I liked Love, so maybe the MJ show will be good. I have not seen Viva Elvis. My friend who lives in Henderson saw VE and liked it, but he said it's definitely not his favorite CdS show. My favorite CdS shows are ones that are more traditionally acrobatic. In recent years—more so with the Vegas productions—they've been more like dance shows. I can't wait for that trend to end. |

Haven't seen the Elvis show but I didn't care for Love at all so based on that scientifically significant sample I too wish they'd not do this kind of show.
With Jackson, though, he was so much more theatrical with his music than the Beatles or Elvis (thanks to music videos) that I wonder how much of a hindrance that will be in that I already have an expectation of how "Bad" should be staged, for example. Apropos of not really, I'll be seeing O again this Saturday. |

I enjoyed LOVE, but then - I love The Beatles. It was not the best Cirque show by a long shot, but not as bad as I'd been led to believe. In fact, I kinda liked it and might see it again. High on dance, low on circus skillz, and - of course - no live music and original score. The last is unforgivable, and I hate that it's the trend. Performances to pre-recorded music (even great stuff like The Beatles) is more static and restricted than you might at first imagine.
I guess it works for their shows that are high on choreography, but low on acrobatics that don't always follow a perfectly-timed script. I hear good things about the Elvis show, but I'm not a big Elvis fan. Now, with this latest announcement, I fear Cirque du Soleil has completely jumped the shark. That's ok, I'm one of their biggest fans - but clearly it's gone on long enough. Their first show in America was way back in 1984 - and I've loved them ever since. A few lower than heavenly points. But mostly hit after hit after hit. Too bad they're coming to Hollywood with one of their big-budget permanent shows when they're so far past their prime. I didn't much care for Ovo, their new touring show which will hit L.A. next October or so. I might check out Viva Elvis. If that also suffers from lack of live music, it will be the last such of their shows I'll pay for. That would mean no EmJay show for me. But these are pricey tix, and I don't much like searing disappointment. |

It is my understanding that the Elvis show uses a live band, live vocals when sung by women and recorded Elvis vocals when sung by him.
I liked Ovo but don't really put it in the same category as the permanent shows. Definitely a much smaller thing. |

I loved O.
Glad I sat where I could see some of the scuba divers under the water, too. That was a tip from Mr. iSm. ![]() |

O is my favorite of the Vegas Cirque shows. I had the pleasure of seeing it again last year and fell in love all over again.

I'm not too thrilled with the idea of MJ and Cirque but then again I wasn't a huge fan of Love and don't realy want to see Viva Elvis. I'm sure the kid will want to see it, as he's a huge MJ fan.
Sadly, I'm way behind on Cirque, Kooza just made it to Portland. So I will catch it while it's here at least. |

I liked Kooza. I know some people who love CdS and wouldn't see that one, finally feeling all the acts have been seen before. And truly, with few exceptions, it's the same type of acts again and again.
Same was true of Kooza - BUT--- I loved the abstract storyline, the music, the costumes, the cast of characters - basically all the cool elements that surrounded the entertaining-yet-same ol' same ol' types of acts. And so, I found Kooza completely enjoyable. Ovo, on the other hand, surprised the hell out of me with a number of original-type acts or some whose like hasn't been seen in quite a while. A couple were truly never-before-Cirqued - - and were amazing. In particular, if the guy who does the final acrobatic act is injured - the show will have lost 70% of its appeal. Because the music was bleh, the costumes uninspired, the spelled-out and hammered storyline of insect love was cute but silly. In short, lacking most of the accoutrement pleasure even with amazing circus acts left me feeling short-changed and mildly disappointed. So by all means, go see Kooza. Cirque du Soleil is going downhill on a steep slope, so it may be one of the last chances to see a good one. |
