Coney Island in Luna Park Sydney

Video to get Moonie excited (if he hasn't seen it already)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=b327xcWVJ5c

Coney Island is my favourite part of Luna Park, and is in itself a tongue-in-cheek homage to the fact that in New York, Luna Park is contained within Coney Island - being the land down-under, we have to have it the other way around.

A little more info (From Wikipedia):
First constructed in 1935, Coney Island - Funnyland is the only operating example of a 1930s funhouse left in the world. Although some changes have been made over the years, the layout is almost identical to when Luna Park opened in 1935.

The design was based on funhouses in Europe and the United States, and contains rotating barrels, moving platforms, large slides, and arcade games. Today's Coney Island is also host to the restored artworks of Arthur Barton, along with photographs and memorabilia spanning Luna Park's 70-year history.

The slides and amusements are the same ones first used in 1935, but modified to meet modern safety standards. The amusements were saved from the 1981 demolition by the 'Friends of Luna Park' action group, who purchased them for $9,200, on the condition that they remain in the heritage-listed building.

It's only Joy if you get the middle spot - otherwise you get flung off first.

I love all of the old machinery in there, but the Turkey Trot remains my favourite (sometimes called a Cakewalk)

In the olden days, Sonny, they used to have it going a lot faster than they do now (for OHS reasons, I guess)

Another memory of the Joy Wheel is friction burns on elbows and forearms, especially when it had been newly polished. Either keep your hands crossed against your chest when dismounting or wear long sleeves.

There's a long passageway that you take to enter that starts high up at the front of the building, and it runs all the way around the edge of the building on the inside. It has shuffle-boards, and blowers and rollers. Half the entertainment was watching everyone making their way around this obstacle course.

Those guys standing in the center of "La Tagada" are not the brave ones. That spot looks like it would be by far the least unpleasant place to be on that ride.

Wow! Mechanized masochism at its finest.
