Eh, don't really care. Especially since the article I read flat out said that one of the reasons he changed his mind and decided to identify himself is that his family wants to cash in on it. That's pretty pathetic.

Actually, I have no problem with him/them revealing his identity to cash in on it. Why should Woodward/Bernstein be the only ones to do so? Their entire fame and fortune is due to this guy. He might as well get something for his family, rather than dying and then letting W/B cash in again when they revealed who it was.

What I find pathetic was that he did it at all. This is not meant to be in defense of Nixon or what happened, but obviously the justice department was investigating, and this guy broke the law, and from what I have read he did it because Nixon didn't give him the top job at the FBI as director when he was second in command. Did it out of spite.

I'm honestly curious here but which law did he break and was convicted for. I'm aware of an unrelated conviction in which he was pardoned by Reagan on the grounds that he had "acted on high principle to bring an end to the terrorism that was threatening our nation." I wasn't aware that he broke the law concerning Watergate however.

He was not convicted for anything related to being "deep throat", as his identity was unknown until yesterday. Over 30 years have passed, long past the statute of limitations for pretty much everything except murder, so he will not be charged with anything.

Further research on my part has me reading much about this - the jury is out on whether a crime was committed or not because so much is still unknown. So I retract my "committed a crime" comment, as there is a wide variety of opinions as to if he did or not. Here's an article that sums it up well -

From the Washington Post, part one of a story by Woodward on the origin of Deep Throat (you may have to register): Deep Throat .

Excerpt:

"In 1970, when I was serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and assigned to Adm. Thomas H. Moorer, the chief of naval operations, I sometimes acted as a courier, taking documents to the White House. One evening I was dispatched with a package to the lower level of the West Wing of the White House, where there was a little waiting area near the Situation Room. It could be a long wait for the right person to come out and sign for the material, sometimes an hour or more, and after I had been waiting for a while a tall man with perfectly combed gray hair came in and sat down near me. His suit was dark, his shirt white and his necktie subdued. He was probably 25 to 30 years older than I and was carrying what looked like a file case or briefcase. He was very distinguished-looking and had a studied air of confidence, the posture and calm of someone used to giving orders and having them obeyed instantly."

I just like the possibility that the great mystery sort of fizzles out at the end. Of course, W&B still won't confirm it, others swear it couldn't possibly be him, ah! We can't let the mystery die! We won't let go!

I heard that Woodward did confirm it today.

I don't know about the cashing in thing, although anything is possible. The guy is 91 years old. It seems that they would have come out sooner with this if they wanted to milk it.

Earlier today, W & B were neither confirming nor denying. Looks like they've since confirmed. As for his family...

His daughter, Joan, argued that he could “make enough money to pay some bills, like the debt I’ve run up for the children’s education.”

Yeah, I read that too, GD, and had the same "ugh" reaction. But I read that as more his daughter than him. I still think it's exciting to finally know.
