Xanadu is heading for Broadway!

Xanadu centers on Kira, a Greek muse sent to Earth to inspire mortals. While on this planet, she helps a man build a disco roller rink. The film was written by Richard Christian Danus and Marc Reid Rubel and directed by Robert Greenwald. It starred Olivia Newtown-John as Kira.

The stage Xanadu will utilize songs from the film, which were written by John Farrar and Jeff Lynne. Christopher Ashley is set to direct the project, which is aiming for an out-of-town tryout in the fall.
Well, that's an... interesting choice of property to mine for the Great White Way....

I am ashamed to admit, I saw this movie on it's first run and I paid to see it.
It's tripe, but the music is fun (the ELO/Jeff Lynne stuff anyway)

Who will play the Gene Kelly role and is Broadway really ready for a disco rollerskate palace? Wait, didn't they already have a disco roller skating musical on Broadway? I think there was, but what was it?

You're probably thinking of Starlight Express. It is indeed performed on roller skates (all the characters are trains), but it's not disco music. It happens to be my favorite show of all time. (Please Note: I did not say it was the best show I've ever seen.)

I have had the Xanadu CD and DVD for some time now. I appreciate it for it's high Velveeta factor. However, I'm not sure that's going to be enough to create a successful Broadway show.

I have it on VHS - I LOVED this movie. I'm sure I've seen it a million times. Will the Tubes reprise their role?

I agree it's way more cheese than substance. I'm not sure if it would translate to a successful show either.
