I wished for you upon a star
On Birthday candles too
But you were you

And we were never meant to be

We were always friends
I thought no more
How could it ever be?

Time passed and we stayed friends of sorts,
And then one night you called
Beer, fun it’s all a blur
I expected nothing more

And then you phoned, and asked me out
I didn’t know what to think
I waited and waited you never showed.
You crashed your car that night
I pretended that’s why you never came
But I knew it was hours later.

Back to being friends
Which was fine
I never thought it would be more

Years passed, we met here and there
“he’s hitting on you”
Never occurred to me you would be
Why now?

More years, I’m single now and you’re not
We meet again
Just friends I think, nothing more.
Not meant to be.

And then you call months later,
Regretting years gone by.
I admit I secretly loved you,
