Balcony Garden
I have a north facing balcony with little direct sunlight (the bottom half is enclosed). I want to grow some veggies for the summer. And maybe some pretty plants.
Any suggestions for plants or veggies to buy that would thrive in this environment? |

We've been successful with herbs and small potted trees. We have a small lemon tree that is doing very well and fruiting, but those require some sunlight.
Our rubber tree is thriving, and that requires only indirect sunlight. ![]() |

You might get some leafy types to do well, like lettuce or baby greens including spinach. You can also get some tomatos to do half way ok, but you may want to put them on an inverted pot to get them up into the sun as much as possible. And some herbs like parsely may work.
Try different thinsgs and see what works. Just watch the watering closely, get a water meter. Dryness on a balcony in pots is a problem.

Not really a place for baskets. I could put a small shelf up and bring it to the level of the top of the wall. There is a plexiglass sound blocker that extends the hight to about 6ft that would prevent anything from falling over. I could also put a trellis (one of the round ones) and grow tomatoes. But I think I need more sun.

Check with ism. I hear he has had great success in growing herbs in dark places.

HI!

No hanging space available? Tomatoes grow REALLY well upside down.

I may be able to hook something over the top of the Plexiglas, or attach a hook to to the glass for a basket. Or buy a pole to hang things off of. or rig up something to hang baskets off of in the corner. Thanks for the ideas!

I just read this thread's title, and for a split second, thought it said Bacony Garden.
