Here's the short & sweet: The Christian Children's Fund (I will not link to them) refused more than $17,000 raised by GenCon in Gary Gygax's name because the money was "tainted" by D&D!

Then I guess they really didn't dserve the money. I'm sure there are a lot of childrens charities that would love to have the money to help children. How about UNICEF?

Perhaps they were thinking:

"You know, if we refuse this relatively small donation it will be great publicity and we'll get even more money donated from like minded conservatives."

I once gave my very conservative evangelical Dad a rundown on exactly how D&D is played, and he looked at me with astonishment and said, "That's IT?" The hysteria and wild claims the Christian right has made about this game far exceeds its potential for harm. (Hey, I still play from time to time, and look at me! - Okay, I'm a dorky middle-aged loser, but NOT satanic, suicidal or even disrespectful to my parents.) I thought that this particular bugbear had long ago played itself out, though. Guess there are are enough lingering fears to create this silliness.

I hope they find another charity more worthy of their largesse. I think it speaks well of the denizens of Greater Geekdom that they raised so much. Good going!

Stuff like this always reminds me of a friend I had in high school. Her parents banned her from seeing "Wayne's World", because it featured the song "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, which references the Devil. Seriously.

As many of you know, I play D&D once a week. What you may not know is that three of the guys I play with are Christians (Presbyterians, to be specific) and oddly enough, they don't have a problem with D&D. I find it astonishing (though I guess I really shouldn't) that this totally unrealistic view of D&D still exists.

BTW, the hysteria surrounding D&D being "satanic" was largely due to the psychotic lies of Patricia Pulling. A thorough debunking of her lunatic campaign against D&D was written by Michael A. Stackpole in The Pulling Report.

I've never played the game, and I'm not going to read either article, but I can't imagine that allegations that a board game is Satanic require a debunking more thorough than "That's f*ckin' stupid."
