Isaac Mizrahi, Meet Liz Claiborne

Isaac Mizrahi is working for Liz Claiborne now. The potential is huge. It's Isaac at a Liz pricepoint.

Fab or drab, Swanky Ones?

I'm going with drab. It kills me to say it. Exhibit A: this The ugliest, most unflattering dress to the largest segment of the female population I have seen in a long, long, loooooong time. You've got your horizontal lines, your flounces, your heinous green graduated polka dots - all in one place! Cherry on top: the gladiator sandals with. Note that you can also get the look in a skirt, just in case you want to make your hips and rear look bigger. If I had to make a dress for my worst enemy, this is it.

Have a look and let's hear what you think.

I guess if you have no figure at all like the model, it's great. I can't imagine that would look good on anyone else.

It could be a love/hate thing for me. I like certain aspects of the collection, (ie. the polka dots that get bigger as the tiers go down) but not the total execution.

There doesn't seem to be much cohesiveness in the Spring Collection. There are a lot of 50's Dior-inspired ensembles mixed in with 70's shirt dresses and boring Talbots "career wear". I appreciate the 50's stuff, but don't wear that silhouette much. The rest of it seems a bit dull.

That's really an interesting point, Lisa. Do you think Isaac knows his audience? He's such a talent but Liz is for middle aged ladies, none of whom could or would (I hope) wear anything like the polka dot dress. The other looks could work, depending.

I described that polka dot dress to the hubbo. "Is it a clown costume?" he wanted to know. He was serious. My sister said "It's sort of weird - Liz Claiborne with a little style. He did very well for Target, he might do well for Liz. I haven't bought Liz in years, but it always did last a long time."

When I read this last night something struck me odd -and then I figured it out today. It was the first time I realized I am middle aged. Reminded me of the first time in the workplace when I realized I wasn't 'one of the kids' any more.

I didn't particularly care for this stuff - I like structure better. Flowy stuff that's big enough for my bottom half hangs horribly on my shoulders, and even though my middle is far from small, it's not as big as my bottom half, so if it doesn't have a semblance of 'shaping' it adds pounds (if the shoulders even fit.)

Oh how I feel ya, sister. I had my realization of the same and it was, at best, unpleasant for me.

My clothes are an eclectic mess of a mix, but I do have some really tailored stuff which has held up well. I just don't wear it very often.

I am old enough to:
- know what I want
- have the freedom to go after it
- rely on the experience of 51 years of living to make better choices.

Since having young body to do all this in isn't an option, I'll just continue aging to perfection.

The polka dog dress is really cute - if you're Paris Hilton or one of those twin drug addict kids. Maybe he's trying to infuse some youth into the audience mix.
