Objectum Sexuality

Have you heard of this?

Objectophilia

My first impression is one of sadness. It is fascinating, of course, but I am heartbroken for this person. I've heard of objectophilia, but always imagined the object of desire to be something smallish. This is the first time I've seen a real person afflicted by the dysfunction. She is obviously intelligent and it makes me so sad to see her passion and love wasted on an inanimate object. It would be easy to just get completely creeped out by it and try not to think about it, but she is so interesting that I am compelled to watch again. Most of us here can understand being drawn to a place (Disneyland or WDW) and the sights and smells there. Also, many of us are captivated by celebrities or people we can never meet. Is this so different? If it pleases her, in spite of it being so far outside the expected norms, who am I to judge? But do you think she can truly be fulfilled by this relationship? I tend to think not, since she does transfer her affection to a new object of desire after seven years or so. But then, that's longer than many relationships between human beings, so perhaps she is getting her needs met. She describes her love(r?) as noble, proud and strong; which are words I'd more often use to describe a person. The affection certainly looks genuine.

Okay, I just watched it again, and to be perfectly honest, I did laugh when she said "I love him for the narrowness of his jibs." And the whole getting down on the ground, wallowing in the grease and smelling it (him) was disturbing. Sigh. It seems worse to me than unrequited love, or loving someone who is cold and has no emotional capacity for intimacy. Sad too, when she said she loves him not in a fetish way, but in a sexual way; that she loves him for a mate. Huh. Does she really see the ride as a potential life partner? Fascinating. Sad and fascinating.

I first heard of it when I stumbled upon this site about the woman who married the Berlin Wall.

I find it fascinating, yet sad.

I have a nephew, now 16 years old, who has Asperger's and is fixated on Minnie Mouse (though NOT, as far as I know, in the manner discussed above.) He carries a plush Minnie with him almost everywhere he goes. (Before Minnie, it was everything Stitch.)

Last February, he came home from school with a lovingly handmade Valentine's Day card and showed it to his mom. She started to thank him for it, but he alerted her abruptly, "It's not for you, it's for Minnie."

Anyway, we generally find these stories amusing among our family, but they always come out kind of disquieting in the retelling.

That makes sense to me. Stitch is funny, Minnie is sweet. I can understand how a person could take comfort from those characters. Minnie Mouse and Stitch have some human qualities and personalities. And though not a cartoon animal, when she was little my daughter told everyone she was going to marry Peter Pan. As a kid I had a crush on Speed Racer. But 1001 Nacht and The Berlin Wall could not be less like living things. Even 1001 Nacht, with lights blazing and music blaring, is still just a big machine. It is astonishing to me how things so not alive evoke such human feelings.

My niece gets fixated on things. She has a chromosome deletion syndrome and functions similarly to a teen with autism. When she was little, everything was Ernie. Then that went to Sebastion. and NOT the little mermaid! She was the little mermaid! She's currently into 3 Blind Mice and keyboards. And by into - I mean obsessed. But not in a sexual way mind you -but very obsessed.
