U.S. Military's Elite Hacker Crew

http://www.wired.com/news/privacy/0,1848,67223,00.html

Quote:
The U.S. military has assembled the world's most formidable hacker posse: a super-secret, multimillion-dollar weapons program that may be ready to launch bloodless cyberwar against enemy networks -- from electric grids to telephone nets.

The group's existence was revealed during a U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee hearing last month. Military leaders from U.S. Strategic Command, or Stratcom, disclosed the existence of a unit called the Joint Functional Component Command for Network Warfare, or JFCCNW.
In simple terms and sans any military jargon, the unit could best be described as the world's most formidable hacker posse. Ever.

The JFCCNW is charged with defending all Department of Defense networks. The unit is also responsible for the highly classified, evolving mission of Computer Network Attack, or as some military personnel refer to it, CNA.
I remember during my last few months in the navy there was some discussion about this, and I still think its not the smartest idea. For one, all the most talented people to do this type of work would not fit in well in a military environment. There will be several highly skilled people that will be contractors for companies working with this group, but I don't see this as being much better then a bunch of script kiddies. The military environment with all its need to document and have procedures for everything that is done is also a very poor place to try to recruit creative thinkers, and to let them loose their creativity is something that would be revolutionary for the military.....And to top it off, I can just imagine all the fights that would occur from an experienced enlisted hacker doing his job being told he's not doing it right by a fresh out of college officer. But I am a bit jaded when it comes to military officers, I know they mean well, but they get in the way too often.

So, now that I have rambled on, what are your thoughts.

I'm thinking "formidable hacker posse" sounds like something out of a lame early 90's cyber-flick.

I'm thinking this is no different that the defense department's use of other smart guys for developing all sorts of weopen systems. Just look at the recent issues with the Los Alamos scientists.
