Last night we had dinner at Vert - the Wolfgang Puck Restaurant at Hollywood & Highland. I know, Wolfgang's a bit passe for this swank crowd, but the place had quite a few swanky touches. Actually, the bar seemed a bit cooler than the dinning room - might be a nice place to stop for a drink between movies.

Friday night was one of my best friend's 31st birthday, so BarTopDancer and I headed up to Santa Barbara to celebrate with him.

First stop was Pasqual's, a legendary old time SB restaurant. Pasqual's is yet another place famous for their strong drinks, and I've been there dozens of times, but every time, when I watch them make the drinks, I'm shocked. First some ice, then fill the glass almost all the way full with vodka, then literally, a splash of tonic. I swear, they don't even pour the tonic for a full second. My friends always joke that the tonic (or whatever mixer) is so expensive that they have to conserve it. The food at Pasqual's is always good, although on Friday I forgot to eat (must have had something to do with the strong drinks), except for a piece of cake that some girl actually tossed to me like a frisbee (again, must have had something to do with the drinks.)

Next we all piled into cars and headed over to The Brewhouse across town to see my friend's band Burning Edamame perform. The band was excellent, as always. Even if I didn't know they were great, I would have known after a creepy stranger told me how great they are three or four times. Yeah dude, I know. I'm the president & only member of their fan club OK, not really.

After the band played, & The Brewhouse had their last call at midnight, we headed back to State Street & headed for my favorite SB Irish pub, Dargan's. Dargan's was totally dead (which would have suited me just fine, but a) the guys wanted to be where the action is, and b) we were out of smokes and Dargan's doesn't sell them.

So we headed across the street to The Press Room which was absolutely packed. The Press Room is the place to go in Santa Barbara if you want to watch your favorite rugby team on satellite. Or if you want to meet hot guys with sexy accents. We closed the place down, then alas, I had a washer, dryer & refrigerator to be delivered the next morning, so we headed back to my place. It was definitely a great evening. When I hit the ripe old age of 31, I hope I can have as swanky a celebration!

Well I have managed to hit a couple of places since my last post.

I have gone, um twice to Chuy's for their Happy Hour drinks prices and chips and salsa. The top shelf caddy margarita is two thumbs up the Melon eh.

Then I hit Mauricio's(yeah more mexican food it's Bakersfield whadda ya expect)for many Prickly Pear Margarita's...two thumbs up for the margaritas(well I saw 4 thumbs)but the food bleech. Nice outside cantina though.

Then this weekend while at DL I had to stop by Uva for a Martini, or three, on Saturday. Canteloupe ones were good, but too expensive.

Then to Tortilla Jo's for happy hour nibbles and more Prickly Pear margaritas(mmmmm very good)and a few snippets of conversation with Evil Minion.

There are more places to discover here and I'll be sure to post them upon finding them. I've been enjoying my cocktails on my back patio lately though, cheaper and I can pick my own music and I can take a dip if it gets too hot

So far I've only made it to the Cheesecake Factory and that doesn't really count. Although I did have a very tasty lemon drop.

We're going to Fremont Outdoor Movie night Saturday, so we may find a beverage consumption opportunity there.

I couldn't figure out how cute guy knew I liked a little coke with my rum. But you know how expensive Coke and tonic is these days... gotta conserve it. I had no idea you had to go all the way to Santa Barbara to meet a guy from HB?

Yay! Drunk directions!!!!!!!! Who knew a Element had so much back seat room? Not me! Every bar has a creepy guy. Ya dude, you're old enough to be my dad. And you're not even remotely attractive. Go away. Thank you.

The drinks there wern't as strong at the brewhouse. I assume they had good beer but I'm not a beer fan, and sadly most of the beer I saw people drinking was not from the tap.

Well, I started out tonight at the Hotel Bar - AKA Le Bar, which is actually a rather swanky place. It's hot in Chicago - 93 today - so I set out for fuzzy water, and once hydrated switched to Sidecars, which they make exceptionally well. Not Afraid joined me for most of this via her favorite media, her cell phone and we traded tales of swank and fashion.

Next up, I had dinner at Le Colonial, a hip Vietnamese place with heavy French Colonial influences (French and Asian - my two favorite things these days ). I ate at one of the sofa lounges in the bar, and with the heat and humidity was instanly transported to Southeast Asia. More fuzzy water with dinner, but I finished with a cognac (Delamain - Mmmmmm)

So, I had read about this place called the Motel Bar, which sounded like a swank way to finish the evening. It's about 10 or so blocks from my hotel so I decided to walk it. Found myself in a hip neighborhood of design and furnature shops with a few cool daytime eateries, but as the sun continued to set, and I continued to walk, I began to notice a shift in the neighborhood, now there were a lot of check cashing places, and loitering women in short shorts and rather tight, high cut halters. Then there was the projects, complete with boarded up windows, and debris. It was then a group of youths passed me by, talking to me in the third person, "That guy's crazy, he should get his white ass home." Considering, I've never been to this place and that it had some sort of funky side street enterance (i.e. picture me looking around dark alleys), I decided to take their third person advice and return to my hotel.

Maybe next time I'll take a cab.
