The Magickal Mystery Kitty

Hey everyone,

Didn't get a chance to post this here yet. Our Maine Coon, Magick, spent 5 days at the vet recently, and we just got his final test results this morning. Unfortunately, he's infected with FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), which is a terminal virus that causes fluid build-up in the lungs and abdomen, and has no cure. They "siphoned" him out and he's at home and very happy - eating, purring, bouncing around, but we don't know how long it will take for the disease to build-up again - could be days or months.

If any of you have had experience with this devastating kitty disease, please share your story. We're just looking for hope in that he'll live a bit longer without suffering.

Waaaaa, so very sorry for you and for kitty. I don't know anything about the disease (and seeing as this news made me very sad, I'm not sure I want to .... but if I hear anything, I'll pass it along)

All I know about this disease is that I think it's one of the annual vaccines.

How old is Magick? I had two Maine Coon's (litter mates) from when they were 10 -- one died at almost 20, the other was almost 21. My vet at the time said they were known for their long lives, so hopefully the strong genes will help out your little guy!

(The vet stopped giving me predictions, 'cause Spotty and MissC would bounce back from stuff that would have been it for kitties much younger.)

Aww, crap. I'm sorry, DP.

I don't know anything about the virus, but I'll see what I can find out. Big hugs to all of you, and I hope that Magick can defy the prognoisis.

So, your kitty has too much abdominal fluid and mine doesn't have enough? Oh, the irony.

Mine has a different disease, but so far the hope I can give you is that each cat is different and don't believe everything you read online. Sometimes it's only the worst cases that you read about and that makes your own situation seem more desperate that it really is. Also, you have to be strong for your cat. The kitty doesn't understand what's happening, but will sense your unease and worry. It's easier said than done, I know. My vet lectured me very firmly about this.

If your cat is happy, then your cat is happy. Love your cat. Spoil your cat.

In other words - proceed as usual.
