Bring Back Your Dead

Doctors are reinventing how they treat sudden cardiac arrest, which is fatal 95 percent of the time. A report from the border between life and death.

I read another story about this some time ago. Basically, research is showing that traditional methods of reviving a patient after a heart attack succeed in reviving the patient, but don't help save him/her (winning the battle, but losing the war so to speak). Basically, better success is found by lowering the body temperature and slowing the overall recovery.

It is an interesting read (despite the dramatic fluff thrown in for the "human interest" aspect).

My dad was one of the lucky 5%. He went into spontaneous cardiac arrest and collapsed one day while at an RV show. Luckily for him, an off-duty paramedic was standing nearby and saw it happen. The guy performed CPR until the ambulance came. My dad recovered (after a long hospital stay) and lived another 11 years.
