Moulin Rouge - August 27 - Free Viewing Under the Stars at OC Performing Arts

The Concert Hall and Community Plaza next to Orange County Performing Arts Center and South Coast Repertory are finally complete. To celebrate, they are having a FREE summer series with movies under the stars and dance parties. It was proposed by some LoTers that we make an August Swanking of:

Moulin Rouge
Free For All Film Series
Monday, Aug. 27, 2007 at 8:30 pm

NO TICKET NEEDED
Popular songs fuel this Academy Award®-winning musical mega-mix extravaganza, setting a tragic love story in a fantastical re-creation of the notorious Parisian nightclub. Nicole Kidman stars with Ewan McGregor and John Leguizamo. Directed by Baz Luhrmann.
Rated PG-13
2001
Here are the details I could find. No mention of alcohol, but this is The OC, so I am assuming no.

The Orange County Performing Arts Center is known for presenting the biggest musicals from Broadway, but The Centers new Free for All takes big to a whole new level with a film series under the stars.

Presented in association with the Newport Beach Film Festival, The Center will inaugurate the series with an alfresco summer series of popular movie musicals projected on the side of Segerstrom Hall each Monday evening in August.

Guests are encouraged to bring beach chairs or other easily portable items on which to sit. No set up before 5:30 p.m. Patina Catering will have box meals and beverages available for purchase.

Movie showing will begin at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Awwwwww man I would love to do this but I have a trial starting that day. Bloody poo. Mebbe I can get it settled before then. Though I am not sure how I can use seeing Moulin Rouge as leverage

I went to West Side Story event here last week (Xanadu and roller disco party is tonight). It was fun and everyone clapped after each music number. The venue may not seem quite as swanky as the cemetery, but still nice, and in the OC for FREE. You can bring any sized chairs, blankets, air mattresses, etc. to sit/lie on. Up front they put down a felt dance-floor type matrial, and in the back they have a dozen or so tables with 4 chairs each. We arrived about 6:30 and plenty of room was available for our chairs.

Picnic is the way to go. The Patina snack bar is so-so: candy, cookies, popcorn, sandwiches (reported to be yuck). There is also a bar in the new concert hall. It is open for cocktails and you can see the movie through the big windows. Many people put down chairs to reserve a spot and returned with food from nearby restaurants (Jerry's Deli, Corner Bakery, pizza, etc.) We partook in wine and other adult beverages we brought ourselves with no problems.

They show the movie on the side of Seagerstrom Hall in the brick courtyard (no grass) next to the new Concert Hall, the screen is not huge. One nice thing about the bricks was it stayed warmer when the sun went down and there was not a lot of dew like the cemetery. There were cartoon shorts at 8:00 and the feature began at 8:30. Music before the movie was fitting to the era of the movie (50s-60s). Who knows, maybe they will play 90s-00 stuff for Moulin Rouge.

We parked in the Seagerstrom Hall garage. It advertised something like $1.50 every 20 minutes, but the gates were up by the time the movie was over and we left for free. If they wise up and start charging like they do for performing arts events, just park at South Coast Plaza near Sears and walk over.

I'd really like to do this, but it would be a time-squeeze for me to make it. I'd like to take zapppop, but that would add even more travel time to an already tight schedule.

Ugh, I have the Gogol Bordello concert the very next night. I loves me some fun ... but the specter of starting off the workweek with two late-night funfests is daunting.

Hmmmmm. Lemme ask zapp if he's interested.

Edited to add: If Ghoulish Delight and Cadaverous Pallor are still in, that's a big motivator for me. I haven't seen them in like 2 weeks, and I'm Jonesing. Not to mention that it's been hours and hours since I last saw Babette!

Seeing as this is 5 minutes from work, I don't have much excuse to miss it.

Quick head count - who will be there tomorrow? (so I know how much space to hold)

I'm a maybe. Can't do better than that right now. Me and Not Afraid and €uroMeinke and Eliza Hodgins 1812 are seeing Gogol Bordello in Hollywood Tuesday night. Starting the school week with two nights out is a little iffy.

I'm leaning toward Moulin Rouge only if it turns out that an equal number of Swankers are attending.

in other words, if Ghoulish Delight and Cadaverous Pallor and Babette are all going, i'm likely to be a "Yes." But I simply can't commit till tomorrow.
