Aaaauuughh! (Bad plastic surgery)

I tend to place plastic surgery in the same category as tattoos, piercings, and other body modifications. People do things to change their appearance all the time - I'm just to fickle to do anything permanent. And while I may not like my graying, or weight gain, or other signs of aging, I pretty much accept them for what they are - battle scars of a life well lived (or so I hope).

It's probably unfortunate that we tend to see ourselves differently from the people who love us. When we look in a mirror our eyes are drawn to our flaws and give them an unnatural amount of attention.

First, what constitutes "being disfigured"? On one hand, if someone had a cleft palate or some other prominent facial disfiguration, I would assume this would in your book be acceptable for plastic surgery. But if the disfiguration was not impeding any senses, wouldn't the surgery be strictly "for vanity purposes?"

On the other side of the coin, what if someone felt that their eyelids drooped too much or they didn't like how their jowls hung down? If the surgery helped them feel better about themselves, why is this a negative thing?

Yeah, lot of gray area there. Guess my own take would be "is my disfiguration freakish?" Heh. I know I have a big nose, and my teeth aren't perfect. I have a sideways smile that sometimes comes out almost a growl in photos. (One set of my prom pics had me growling - my date was gracious enough to keep those.) But slice into my skin to change how I was born??? It would take some serious issues for me to feel this need.

I'd have to see an example, I guess. Even if it does look right, and I can't tell, I still think it's kinda sad. I know BTD had something done, and if it made her happier, then of course I can't say anything against her decision. For me personally....if I got to the point where I thought my own face, my bones, my genes were offensive to me.....I don't know what I'd do.

People alter their bodies for all kinds of reasons. I tend to hold opinions on the reasons and not so much on the act.

In my close circle of friends I know a couple that have had cosmetic surgery and it was for reasons I can't really argue with and they're happier for it. I personally have twice used surgery to alter my body to better fit with my lifestyle choices.

Since she posted about it, I have to say that BTD's surgery is completely unnoticeable. Had I not known her before, I would have never known she had anything done - I think her surgeon is to be applauded.

The other person I know is a non-LoTer, so you'll just have to trust me that her surgery looks good.

I had my soul removed with a real dull knife last year..
