SJ - latex is out. Not allergic, but it makes it not easy to breathe when in close proximity to my face.
Sorry to hear that. Note that 99% of latex allergies are to a protein found in latex gloves....latex mattresses don't have that protein.

Get yourself a memory foam mattress made from Sensus Brand visco-elastic. It's very similar to Tempurpedics but sleeps much cooler. It's also probably going to cost you about 30-40% less.

I've wanted to look into some of the mattress coolers available on the market, but I am not sure how they will impact the comfort of the mattress.

Good to know - but I'm still not willing to take the chance.

Besides the latex and memory foam mattresses, do you have any recommendations or tips?

I have a featherbed topper. I love it. Keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. You have to fluf it every few days though or it gets all flat and lumpy.

Aside from foam based mattresses I know little except one thing......firm mattresses can always be made, thru the additions of toppers and such, to feel softer......the reverse in not as easy.

it takes a little getting used to admittedly. you dont just leap into bed, thats for sure. at least not twice

mine is about 6-8" thick plain cotton mat with a memory foam pad on top. beyond that, its pretty much resting on a rig much like the one you brought to camp. a frame and some boards across it to hold. bottom line...a table.

love it. 90% of my back issues went away after I got it. at this point I can't imagine sleeping on a springy mattress (or god forbid some squishy thing) again. probably why I slept so well in that truck bed.

My vote is for the memory foam. We've had ours for a few years now and it's wonderful. It folded in half to fit inside my CR-V and when unfolded was a proper flat mattress. We have it on a futon frame.

Garbage companies usually have a provision for large items, you're usually allowed to dispose of them once a year for free. Something like that.

Personally I'm impressed that a tread with the title "Buying a bed" could go all the way to #29 posts without a single quote worthy innuendo.

I thought for sure when "Latex" was brought up........
