The Lowdown
These are the acts I would book as regulars in my Wiemar Cabaret.

The Scene

I came to see Amanda Palmer, the vocal/Piano half of the Dresden Dolls. She's been working on solo material for awhile now with Ben Folds and has slipped a few previews into Dresden Doll shows so I knew seeing her in a small club would be awesome.

I had no idea about the opening act, Vermilion Lies but within seconds of them playing we were down on the floor. A quirky sister duo, with the vaudeville flavorings familiar to the Ditty Bops, they were experts at engaging the audience with their versatile showmanship - trading instruments, pulling "musical" found objects out from "inside the box." Add to this some bawdy lyrics, songs about zombies, and global warming and I couldn't resit hitting their swag table after their set and buying both their CDs. I'd definitely keep my eye out for these gals again.

This was of course the perfect appetizer for the main course, Amanda Palmer also just puts on a great show full of surprises and little additions that you'd never get from a Studio album. Like the Dresden Dolls you can count on her to pull out a great cover (or reinterpretation) and her between song banter really reveals that she's up on stage having the time of her life eager to share the delight with her audience.

One big surprise was that her father joined her in a duet of a Leonard Cohen song. Her father had one of those rich sultry country voices and made for a great complement to her soft voicing of this song.

Her encore was also a delightful piece of theatrics as she walked along the balcony singing Radiohead playing the Ukulele completely acoustic - silencing the crowd until they all joined in as she retook the stage.

A spectacular show and one I'd recommend seeing (since this was day one of the tour, some of you might have that opportunity).
